Video Tutorial: How to Crochet A Long Stem Rose

Valentine’s Day may traditionally be a day for lovers, but why not also cheer up another who loves you too? Follow along with me to crochet a realistic looking long stem rose! Whose mom or friend wouldn't want to receive this Valentine?

Using just single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), chain (ch), slip stitches (sl st), and a little bit of wire, it's easier than you think. Plus, it's a great project to use up any crochet thread you happen to have lying around. Let's go!

Written Pattern: Long Stem Crochet Rose

Supplies

  • size 3 crochet thread in a color of your choice
Note: (several roses can be made with one standard ball)
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook (C-2 US)
  • light gauge wire
  • stem length heavy gauge wire or floral wire
  • floral tape (optional)
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors

method

Worked in the round with each round joined with a slip stitch at end of round.

Petal Instructions

round one

With crochet thread, make adjustable ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc into ring. Tighten ring. Join with sl st in top of ch 3 from beginning of rnd.—16 sts

ROUND two

Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same stitch. 2 dc in each remaining stitch around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3 from beginning of rnd.—32 sts

ROUND three

Work each stitch in this rnd around a piece of thin gauge wire approximately 6" long. Ch 1, 2 sc in in same stitch. (Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around. Join with sl st in first sc of rnd.—48 sts Fasten off and weave in crochet thread ends. Twist wire ends together.

Repeat rounds 1 to 3 to make as many petals as desired. 6–8 petals is recommended, but you may do as many or as few as you wish.

Assembly

Cut a piece of heavy gauge wire as long as you wish your rose stem to be. Using the twisted light gauge wire on each petal, wrap each petal onto the stem. Keep the wires bunched at the base of the bud and ensure that you fold and overlap the petals as you work. Lastly, wrap floral tape over the wire join and down the length of the stem.
