ceramic care

Tableware & Plantware

With the exception of pieces with painted gold enamel, seagrass, and leather, all Nima Stoneware tableware and plantware ceramics are dishwasher, oven and microwave safe. Ceramics with painted gold enamel are top-rack dishwasher safe but not microwave or oven safe. Pieces with seagrass and leather are handwash only.

To extend the life of your ceramics, handwashing is always recommended. Gradually increase/decrease temperature and do not expose pieces to thermal shock—for example, never go directly from freezer to oven. Clean unglazed surfaces with a scrub brush, water and baking soda. Surfaces with crackle glaze will lightly stain with time due to the crazed surface, many find that this enhances the look. Crazing, which can be described as tiny cracks in surface glaze, is a desirable and common aesthetic goal of many ceramicists.

jewelry

To maintain ceramic surfaces, buff gently with a soft cloth only. Avoid jewelry and household cleansers as they may alter surfaces with painted gold enamel. Just like your favourite leather bag, leather cords and crackle glaze surfaces (see above) will develop a natural patina from contact with oils during regular use—embrace it. On occasion, lightly tighten slip knots on adjustable leather cords. Wear and store your pieces with care, they are not impervious to damage from collision or impact.

raku

Raku pieces are offered in rare limited editions and are not always available.

Raku is not food safe as it is unvitrified (porous) and will absorb organic materials. Thus, it is for decorative purposes only and is not dishwasher, oven or microwave safe. To maintain raku’s often dramatic surface, display out of direct sunlight and avoid contact with water and/or cleansers. Clean with a soft cloth only. Black surfaces have been created through carbon deposits during firing, these are especially vulnerable to “accidental” cleaning. To use raku pieces as a vase or planter, line with a pot liner.
